Mudgee Medical Centre
The Client
Ian Birchall Constructions is a very busy building company which has been operating for 29 years in the Mudgee and Gulgong district; a well-respected builder acknowledged by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) of NSW as Professional Small/Medium Builder of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Ian Birchall Constructions is also a member of the HIA and the Master Builders Association (MBA).
The Challenge
Initially Ian Birchall Constructions was approached by a group of local doctors who wished to move and expand from their previous medical surgery location in Mudgee. Ian Birchall Constructions subsequently engaged Barnson to complete full civil design work, prepare a traffic impact statement and undertake all surveying required for the new Mudgee Medical Centre in Church Street, Mudgee. The brief for the medical centre was that it must be a state-of-the-art premises that will not only accommodate seven doctors, but it must also accommodate pathology and radiology services along with its own pharmacy.
Our Approach
The challenges for Ian Birchall Constructions included the procurement and consolidation of the land, whilst challenges shared with Barnson were the relocation of an existing sewer main, the provision of storm water on-site detention and the control of traffic. Ian Birchall Constructions and Barnson worked closely to meet these challenges.
In order for the project to run smoothly despite the above challenges, a methodical planning approach was adopted. Good project management from both Barnson staff and Ian Birchall meant that the ‘critical path’ of the project was not affected and tasks could be undertaken in consecutive order without unnecessary delays.
Regular meetings contributed to the project flowing to a timely schedule and ensured that expensive delays were avoided. Ian commented that the quick response times from Barnson staff were particularly beneficial to his project operation as tasks that needed urgent attention were addressed promptly and consequently the project’s sequencing of tasks was unaffected. Ian Birchall acknowledged that Barnson staff were flexible in their approach to problem solving and this also contributed to a well-planned and successful project.
The Result
After a year in planning and construction the Mudgee Medical Centre was completed on time due to the diligence of Ian Birchall Constructions and the no-nonsense planning and problem-solving of Barnson staff.
